Urucum seed oil is reddish in color due to a high content of natural carotenoids (natural pigments). Carotenoids found in Urucum are mainly bixin and nor bixin. Bixin extracted , is currently used as a food colorant, and has been shown to protect against ultraviolet rays and to have antioxidant and liver protective properties in clinical research.
Urucum oil is an emollient, and its high content in carotenoids (six times more than carrot oil), provides antioxidant benefits to body care products, adding a natural reddish color to creams, soaps and shampoos.
In Latin countries, Urucum oil is traditionnaly used to protect the skin from the sun, and as an antiseptic for ear, eye and skin infections.It is also used for digestive problems, prostate and urinary infections, and to treat hypertension and high cholesterol levels.
Urucum oil is extracted from the seeds of the fruit of Urucum.

Properties and Cosmetic Applications
Urucum oil is a good emollient and a moisturizing agent. Its high content in caritenoids makes
it a natural suntan product, it helps to tan and to maintain the tan, giving a more orange tone
to the skin. May be used in cosmetics such as :

  • Shampoos
  • Hair conditioners
  • Body lotions
  • Massage creams
  • Dyes and post dyes emulsions

Concentration 1% to 5%.

 

Storage and Shelf life
Storage:    Store in tightly closed container, away from any sources of light or heat.
Shelf life:   24 months from manufacturing date.
